Dear friends
Greetings from St. Charles Seminary, Nagpur.
It gives me great pleasure to welcome and introduce you to St. Charles Seminary, the house of Formation and nursery of vocation to Priesthood and religious life. SCS Seminary is the major seminary belongs to the Archdiocese of Nagpur and is staffed and administered by the Friars of the Order of preachers (O.P.) since 1960.
The Seminary follows the Spirituality of Patron St. Charles Bormeo. The vision of the Seminary is to form the future pastors of the Church after the model of Jesus, the Good Shepherd and the Eternal Priest.
The mission of the seminary is to provide Integral formation of the candidates to priesthood addressing various dimensions of priestly life and ministry, uniqueness of the formees and pastoral needs of our time. A special thrust on pastoral dimension, enabling the seminarians to become shepherds after His own Heart who will feed with knowledge and understanding (Jer 3:15), will be characteristic of its programme of formation.
The students to Priesthood are called to strive after excellence and holiness. The Seminary aims at imparting a holistic formation which caters to the physical and psychological well-being, intellectual growth and spiritual, social and community living.
Seminary life is marked by communal prayer, fraternity, evangelistic zeal, growth in virtue, and intellectual engagement. It is a house of discernment filled with encouragement.
The seminary would accompany its formees by initiating in-depth pursuit of philosophical and theological learning, providing chances for active pastoral involvement and inculcating fundamental human qualities for interpersonal relationships required for their future ministry.
To help the seminarians to be conscious of the pastoral and social exigencies, which they have to address in the future, the theology students are sent to different parishes on Sundays. Under the guidance and inspiration of the parish priests the seminarians animate liturgical celebrations, teach catechism, conduct family unit meetings, visit the families and coordinate pious organizations in the parishes assigned to them.
The church exists precisely to communicate Jesus Christ and proclaim his good news to all. And this good news is a person-Jesus of Nazareth, whom we are called to make known to the world. However, in the digital age, the Church is called to “read the signs of the times” and to find and use new means of communication in bringing the love of God to many peoples.
I am sure that the website of the seminary will provide an ample platform not only to publish the news and events of the seminary but also to spread the word of God and bring others to Jesus. May St. Charles Seminary continue to inspire the generations of priests to become a very effective instruments of the church in India and everywhere to promote the Gospel and the Church.
